STREAM - FAQ

Find Answers to the Frequently Asked Questions on STREAM.

How do we benefit from deploying STREAM?

The benefits from deploying STREAM are quite a lot. Some of the benefits of deploying STREAM is provided below:

• Provides for 'Accurate and Actual' usage of Resources.

• Extensive Reporting on the time spent in various project related critical activities.

• Inventory of all software assets in the project, which can be extended also for the organization.

• Usage pattern reporting to help steer the project into the right direction, in case of slippages.

• An excellent overview of the project execution, helping project managers, set up 'proof of concept' much early in the project lifecycle.

• Combined with the Project management tool and other statistical reporting tools, metrics can be generated to derive 'Business Intelligence' and improve your overall process initiative.

• Centralized resource management.

• Centralized resource administration.

• Very low Total cost of ownership.

What is STREAM?

STREAM is a ‘Business Intelligence’ tool for software projects. It can be put to use by all software development companies involved in either fixed cost or time and material projects. STREAM is designed to report on the actual usage of resources like time, material and other resources involved in the execution of a project. Combined with its capability to report on usage of time and resources, along with a project management tool, STREAM can provide excellent project monitoring and status reporting of the execution of the project, while it is progressing.

What are the components of STREAM?

STREAM has three major components:

• STREAM Client, an utility installed on all client machines, which helps in reporting the usage of resources.

• STREAM Console, used to setup and monitor STREAM Clients.

• STREAM Reports, a versatile utility which is used to report on the usage patterns of time, resources and other activities

What does STREAM Client do?

STREAM client runs on the client machines, where usually software development takes place. It automatically keeps a track of the resources utilized and reports back to the STREAM Server.

Do I have to invest in special environments for the deployment of STREAM?

Not required. All that is required for the successful deployment of STREAM is the specified hardware configuration and a single instance of a data repository (Microsoft SQL Server Version 2000 and above) on the network.

What data repository is supported? Does the data repository ship with the product?

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and above is supported. No. As STREAM uses a COTS database, the same is not shipped with the product.

Can I have a combination of multiple methodologies, like could I have some working on Multi Server and some on Single Server environments?

Yes. STREAM is designed to support alternate and multiple methodologies. In case your project teams are scattered and you would like to group them into a single logical database, you could do that using the 'Single Server Architecture'. On the contrary, if you would like to segregate these projects as two or more different repositories, you could deploy STREAM using the 'Multiple Server Architecture'. A combination of these two is also possible in the same environment.

Is STREAM a snooping tool?

No. STREAM instead is a tool that actually helps in understanding the usage patterns and provides critical data on the usage of resources, thus helping in managing projects more effectively.

Do we have to undergo any special training to deploy and manage STREAM?

A one day overview to administrators of the organization who would be deploying STREAM is all that is required. The entire product is completely user friendly and is backed up by an excellent product documentation and a dedicated support team.
